Influenced by Japanese traditional painting, manga and anime, Murakami gave the name "Superflat" to describe its art, a reflection of a post-war society in which consumerism has abolished frontiers between social structures. Through the use of bidimensional graphics, he depicts a universe of forced infantilism, a consequence of the Second World War, a kawaii nature that is being progressively replaced by a darker side facing violence and erotism, echoing a maturing consciousness and somehow a rebirth of Japan.

Murakami is the president-founder of Kaikai Kiki Corporation, an art production and artist management company that has placed several artists on the top of the international art scene such as Chiho Aoshima, or Aya Takano. In 2003, he was invited by Marc Jacobs to revisit the Louis Vuitton monogram. The collaboration between the iconic brand and the Japanese artist lasted will give birth to several collections. His 2010 exhibition in the Chateau de Versailles in France stirred much controversy.
