Captain Harlock (1978-1979) | Japan | Japanese animation

The anime

Albator or Captain Harlock is the master work of mangaka Leiji Matsumoto. Composed of 5 volumes released between 1977 and 1979, it was popularized through a 42-episode anime produced by Toei Animation. For a generation of Western Europeans, Captain Harlock is often cited as the first manga and anime they ever discovered!

It depicts the adventures of a romantic space pirate that fled from Earth, where the humanity has become apathic under the constant threat of foreign invaders. Aboard the Arcadia ship and accompanied by Miime, Daiba, Kei and Yattaran, Captain Harlock will search and fight the greatest of those, the Mazone. In 2013, Toei Animation produced a 3D movie inspired by the manga. It was released in movie theatres across the globe.
